Summary

More than half of the world’s population uses more languages in daily life. All over the world children grow up in a multilingual environment. Despite of this fact the general attitude towards bilingualism and multilingualism is characterized by reservation and uncertainty. Is the parallel learning of two or more languages a personal overload for a child? Could language disorders or learning difficulties at school be a consequence of bilingualism / multilingualism? On the other hand: How can multilingual children be supported and how to maintain bi- or multilingualism in a one-language-environment? The author shows how to raise bi- or multilingual children successfully. With the help of case examples the author gives concrete tips and instruction how to handle difficulties in the language learning process and how two or more languages can be integrated in daily life.
